My husband and I were once married in a small chapel in the south of Brazil. To honor our vows we used to light candles over our dinner plates and pray together. Just like our kitchen candle, it’s made of wax that burns out, leaving behind a white circle on the floor. In the end, the only thing that’s left of the candle is our kitchen in the middle of a thick black ash.
