Toyota is currently working on a new high-performance 4-cylinder engine for the Rav4. I know this because at the end of the 2018 Toyota Rav4 production year, Toyota announced that the Rav4 would get an even larger engine (a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel). This engine will come in several forms, and will have a maximum output of 180 hp.
The 1.5-liter turbo-diesel will do around the same amount of work as the 1.8-liter turbodiesel, but will have the added benefit of being able to actually run at full throttle. It will come in a 4-cylinder, as well as a 5-cylinder. No, I don’t mean that in a bad way. The 5-cylinder will be a “special edition”.
Toyota has the option of building a 1.8-liter turbo-diesel with the same engine as the new Rav4. Toyota is also working on a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel that has a maximum output of only 140 HP. The turbo-diesel has a direct-injection engine and can be mated to a 5-cylinder. The engine will come in four different forms, but will all have a maximum output of 140HP.
The new engine is being built in North America, so it will be available in the US and Canada in the next few months. In the US the engine will be called the “GXP-R4-FE.” It will be available as a turbo and a direct-injection engine. The direct-injection engine has a maximum output of only 140HP.
